Alborosie Dub Station

Straight from the heart of Jamaica’s most prolific music community, Waterhouse in Kingston, AudioThing proudly introduce you to the Alborosie Dub Station.

AudioThing sampled, analyzed, and carefully recreated the original filter, echos, and spring reverb pre-owned, modified, and used by the legendary Osbourne Ruddock “King Tubby” – producer, studio engineer, and pioneer of dub reggae from the golden era of the 70s – from Alborosie’s personal vintage gear collection.

ECHOWUK: Directly from federal studios, then King Tubby studio in Waterhouse Kingston, the MCI 2 track tape that was used to record and also to create the echo effect for most of the reggae classics overall and popular Tubby’s instrumental dub mixes.

SPRING BLING: Directly from King Tubby studio in Waterhouse Kingston, the modified Fairchild Spring Reverb used by the Maestro himself in most classic records and dub mixes he recorded and produced.

FILTER MAN: Modelled after Tubby’s so-called “Big Knob”, a passive high-pass filter with eleven frequency steps from 70Hz to 7.5KHz. This filter defined the sound of the entire ‘roots’ area of Jamaican music!

Wires

German composer and YouTuber Hainbach opened his treasure chest for us: AudioThing are happy to present to you Wires, an accurately modelled and enhanced 1970s Soviet wire recorder. Made originally for military and secret service use across the Iron Curtain, in the hands of a few avant-garde musicians it became a magical lofi-tool and ghostly echo machine. Now this rare and rather finicky-to-operate piece of hardware is available for the first time as a faithful yet modern plugin. Transform your audio to the world of numbers stations and secret operations, dub out to very unusual echoes or make the most lofi beats to study too.

AudioThing took great care to get all the idiosyncratic behaviour exactly right – it reacts dynamically to the input and does stuff to audio that is a completely different texture to magnetic tape. There is a special tone to the hair-thin wire and the vacuum tube output stage of this machine, unheard of anywhere else. The standard way to make a unit such as this music is to put it on an aux channel of a mixer, to turn it into a fixed tempo echo. AudioThing offer all the variable time features you want, as well as the option to switch off the rather high noise floor of this machine without sacrificing the rather alive sound.

Features

  • Magnetic Wire Emulation
  • Echo Section
  • Original Speaker and Mic Emulation
  • Start and Stop effects
  • Hiss and Motor noise with Envelope
  • Resizable Window
  • Preset system with randomizer

Springs

Springs is a plugin which features a collection of vintage spring reverbs paired with an authentic Baxandall EQ emulation. Springs features emulations from 8 types of spring reverbs, ranging from a long 6-spring pipe to a tiny battery-powered single-spring unit. AudioThing have used a combination of convolution and modelling to recreate the vintage character of each reverb.

Spring reverbs were usually paired with tone stacks from guitar amplifiers. Springs features one of the most iconic and unique sounding tone stack equalizers: the Baxandall EQ. A classic Baxandall tone stack usually features just the bass and treble bands, but AudioThing have also added a Mid band (with control over the Q).

Features

  • 8 Vintage Spring Reverbs
  • Baxandall EQ (three bands)
  • 50 Presets
  • Resizable Window
  • Preset system with randomizer

Reels

Reels is a tape emulation plugin with built-in echo section and tape-stop effect.

Based on an old Japanese portable tape recorder with a very distinct Lo-Fi analogue sound, Reels emulates all the imperfections of consumer reel-to-reel recorders.

AudioThing have modelled three different 1/4” tape frequency responses and saturations, along with all the analogue imperfections of tape recording/playback.

Reels will add a very rough retro analogue sound to your mixes. If you are looking for a Hi-Fi mastering tape emulation, this is not the plugin for you!

Features

  • Vintage Tape Emulation
  • Tape Stop Effect
  • Echo Section
  • 3 Tape types
  • Hiss and Motor noise with Envelope
  • Resizable Window
  • Preset system with randomizer

Type A

Type A is a plugin inspired by a famous vintage tape encoder. The original unit was designed to be a noise reduction system for tape recording (encode stage) and playback (decode stage).

Type A emulates the encode stage, which was often misused as an enhancer, dynamically increasing the top end of a signal without introducing artefacts or altering the harmonic content. The results are similar to a dynamic EQ which adds presence and air to any track in a natural way.

Features

  • Vintage Enhancer
  • Multi-band Compressor with 4 Bands
  • Adjustable Unit Noise
  • Oversample up to 16x
  • Resizable Window
  • Preset system with randomizer
  • Formats: VST, VST3, AU, and AAX (32/64bit)
  • Platforms: OSX, Windows

Type B

Type B is a plugin inspired by a famous vintage exciter effect. The original unit was designed to add presence and brightness to vocal or instrument tracks. It was often used to enhance dull recordings where the high-frequency content was missing due to tape overdubs.

Type B lets you control more aspects of the exciter circuit emulation, giving you access to the internal filter, the harmonic generator and more.

Features

  • Vintage Exciter
  • HP/BP Filter with Emphasis
  • Adjustable Unit Noise
  • Oversample up to 16x
  • Resizable Window
  • Preset system with randomizer

Outer Space

Outer Space is a faithful emulation plugin of a famous vintage tape echo made in the early seventies. As the original unit, Outer Space features an echo section with three playback heads and a spring reverb tank. We have modelled three different tape frequency responses and saturations, along with all the analog imperfections of tape recording/playback. We’ve also modelled the ballistic response of the delay rate (repeat rate) which can create eerie pitch shifts (due to the Doppler effect), one of the classic tape echo-based sound effects.

We’ve modelled three different tape types. The original RT-1L, a more modern replacement, and an older worn out tape. Each tape will affect the sound in a subtle but different way, especially at higher feedback (Intensity) settings

WOW/Flutter will also change according to the selected tape, creating different amount of pitch and volume nonlinearities.

Changing the speed of the repetitions (Repeat Rate) will also affect the tape frequency response.

Features

  • Vintage Tape Echo
  • 3 Tape modes: Original, Modern, Old
  • Spring Reverb (with short/long Decay)
  • Background Noise with Envelope
  • Oversample up to 16x
  • Preset system with randomizer
